Is it time to pull out your resume and digitally dust it off? Many people are looking for a new position, and LOTS of people hate writing their resume. Well, I gotta a resume writing professional to help you out. Several professionals, actually.
Recently I talked to resume writers and career coaches to find out what services they offer, what it is like to work with them, and what the price tag for a professionally crafted resume is.
What services do they offer?

What is it like to work with a writer and coach?
Working with them is definitely not a one-way conversation. They want to establish a relationship with you and have you explain your work experience to them. Some writers will have a standard intake process which will include reviewing your current resume and LinkedIn profile. Some will have you send job postings that interest you. You may send them past job descriptions for roles you worked in. Then they will work with you to determine what career goals you have and how to effectively convey your experience for specific jobs.
Once you have had that initial conversation, writers will put together a draft. Together you will review, edit and tailor future drafts until you both feel confident with the final version.
How long does the process take? Resume writers will give you a timeline upfront when you start working with them. Some writers will get through the process, with your input, within a week. Most resume revisions and LinkedIn spiffing up projects take about ten days to two weeks. Additional services, such as job search coaching, biography preparation take additional time, but as long as you are involved and responsive when your writer asks for input, the final products are complete within 2-4 weeks.
How much does it cost to have your resume crafted by a professional? Most writers have their prices lined out for the services you are looking for. A basic resume revamp can run from $300 to $600. Getting your resume polished, your LinkedIn profile perfected and sample cover letters created can run from $500 to $1,200. For C-Suite and board member dossiers the price can run from $1,200 to $4,800. Some writers provide cost per service provided while others have package deals.
What happens next? All of these writers talked about how much they enjoy working with their clients on their career process and the documents. Most projects they work on are with past clients refreshing their documents. These writers have typically been working in this field for 15 to 25 years. Often, they were previously in human resources in the alcoholic beverage industry, or have worked with many consumer package goods professionals. Just like an executive recruiter, the majority of their business comes from referrals.
